Any film that can drop the quotes, “Then I’ll bang your tuna girlfriend” and “Gator’s bitches better be wearing jimmies” is a winner in my book. There were times during this movie that I almost wet myself from laughing so hard. I laughed out loud more than enough to earn a recommendation.
That being said, this cop-buddy comedy is not entirely successful. It must attempt at least 200 jokes, verbal or visual, during its running time. Only about 30 of them really work. But when they do… oh my god, they are funny. The other 170 efforts will probably be met with head-scratching or eye-rolling.
Will Ferrell is one of those guys who either works for you or not. In my case, I start giggling when I see his face. Mark Wahlberg is surprisingly good when it comes to this type of comedy. He plays lunatic rage with such authenticity that it is almost scary.
Listen, “The Other Guys” is not going to revolutionize the genre. It will probably make you feel a little dumber after having watched it. But that’s ok. It cannot be faulted for effort. It is funnier than 95% of flat-out comedies released each year. It deserves to be rented on DVD when you are in a silly mood.
