She spent the early years of her life in over two dozen locations around the world with her parents before she finally found her place at Boston University, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree in acting from the School of the Performing Arts.

Born Julie Anne Smith, she had to change her name when she registered with the Actor's Guild as every variation of her name seemed to be taken. She then combined her first two names and assumed her father's middle name as her surname.

Son, Cal (b. 4 December 1997). Father is director Bart Freundlich.

Is a staunch pro-choice advocate and an active member of Planned Parenthood.

Her gift is a profound one.  She can do on screen that which no other actor of this era can approach.  Julianne Moore is elegant and beautiful and one of the many reasons that I love films so very much.  She has the ability to make me feel everything all at once... happy, wistful, sad, sentimental, regretful, content, courageous & in love.  She is one of the very best actresses ever.  No wonder she has been at the top of every director's list for the past decade and will continue to be so for years to come.
