She is one of the founding members of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble, where she got her professional start.

Attended Northern Illinois University from 1976 through 1978.

She has a daughter named Sadie. 

She is very supportive of her home town and goes home every summer where she spends time with aspiring actors and actresses.

She has been nominated for Academy Awards on multiple occasions.

Joan won a Tony Award in 1989.

Said of working with director Oliver Stone... "To tell you the truth, if Oliver Stone had wanted Pat Nixon to wear a G-String and swing from a chandelier, I would have played it that way."
