“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” Review

November 13, 2010  |  Movies, Reviews

This superhero, comic book, video game mish-mash is cute, clever and cool — sometimes too cute, too clever and too cool.  It is a consistently amusing and randomly hilarious flick that never quite wears out its welcome despite working ever so hard to entertain us with its awesomeness.

I can’t quite give it a glowing endorsement because the fight sequences get a little tiresome and the usual meek-ass dweeb shtick from Michael Cera is something he really needs to grow out of soon.  Also, the film leaves you with the distinct impression that the entire cast and crew were oh-so aware of how hip they had to be…. you can see their efforts plastered all over the screen.  It just tries a little too hard.

All that being said, I was curious enough about the characters to care and amused enough to keep chuckling out loud.  Any film that can do that is worthy of a recommendation.  The target audience is clearly 13-20 years old, but even us 30-somethings can get something out of it.  Any older than that and you might want to consider a nice cup of warm milk before nap time.

PS – It makes me weep that I am not currently, nor will I ever be, making out with Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
