“New York, I Love You” Review

November 27, 2010  |  Movies, Reviews

The second in the “Cities of Love” series is a collection of short film masterpieces.  I thought the original, “Paris Je T’Aime”, aptly set in the most romantic city of them all, was brilliant.  Some of the shorts worked better than others, but it ranked as one of the most ambitious and memorable films of 2007.  However, this New York version tops it.  There isn’t a weak link in the film.  Each and every gem is worth treasuring. “New York, I Love You”… I Love You.

This one differs from the original in that the segments feel connected somehow.  The Parisian collaboration was 20 very unique and separate visions of love.  The Big Apple effort flows together beautifully.  Big names abound in front and behind the camera in both films.  In this one, you are treated to the talents of James Caan, Natalie Portman, Drea Di Matteo, Christina Ricci, Maggie Q, Qi Shu, Blake Lively, Hayden Christensen, Andy Garcia, Julie Christy, Orlando Bloom, Ethan Hawke, Robin Wright Penn, Olivia Thirlby, Bradley Cooper, John Hurt, Shia LaBoeuf, Chris Cooper, Cloris Leachman & Irrfan Khan.  And I haven’t even mentioned the directors.

I can’t figure out which segment was most wonderful.  Each of the approximately dozen short films has a stunning moment of one kind or another.  Each showcases beautiful performances.  There are scenes of epic sensuality, heartfelt honesty, tragic sadness, playful flirtations, etc.  It runs the gamut of love’s infinite possibilities.

I cannot recommend a film more than this.  “New York, I Love You” is a triumph of both short-form and long-form filmmaking.  It is easily one of the very best films of 2009.  I am eagerly awaiting the third, fourth, fifth in the series.  Rumors suggest either Shanghai or Rio as the next in line.  Do yourself and your inner romantic a massive favor… find this film and watch it at your earliest convenience.
