Of the 20+ romantic comedies released each year, only a few manage to avoid being supremely forgettable. The overwhelming majority of them just blend in with the countless other clones. It is an overly saturated genre. The successful ones usually feature good performances, unique stories and genuinely heartfelt moments. “Letters to Juliet” has all of that.
I concede that this movie has its fair share of cheese. It is the absolute definition of a chick-flick. However, it never crossed my line. It never made me roll my eyes. It never felt overly manipulative despite leaning more towards romance than comedy. I always felt that the characters were genuinely good people, making it easy to root for them.
Amanda Seyfried has deservedly become a massive star over the past few years. She is unspeakably beautiful and manages to exude sincerity and intelligence by the bucket load in every film. I cannot think of any actress working today who can do these types of roles better than she can.
“Letters to Juliet” is very easy to recommend. All but the most cynical women will love it — and men who can access the softer half of their heart will enjoy it too.
