“Knight and Day” Review

December 21, 2010  |  Movies, Reviews

Here is a movie rule-of-thumb that you can rely on…

Preposterously Implausible Action + Takes Itself Seriously = Terrible Movie
Preposterously Implausible Action + Recognizes Its Silliness = Fun Movie

“Knight and Day” falls into the latter category.  It is one of the easiest watches of the year.  It isn’t going to win anything outside of the MTV Movie Awards, but it ranks as one of the most lighthearted and entertaining blockbusters you will see in 2010.

Tom Cruise is a rogue CIA operative who is on the run from virtually everyone as he tries to conceal the whereabouts of a dangerous new invention called the “Zephyr”.  On his travels, he bumps into Cameron Diaz who ends up tagging along for the ride.  Everybody wants the technological breakthrough for themselves and we follow the couple as they traverse the planet trying to elude the “bad guys”.

The action sequences are ludicrous…  But that’s okay because the film and the actors are in on the joke.  This is one of the most tongue-in-cheek movies you will ever see.  It plays more as comedy than action — but there is plenty of both.

Cruise and Diaz are in fine form opposite one another.  They are a perfect fit on the big screen.  “Knight and Day” requires about seven brain cells to comprehend and enjoy.  It doesn’t have an ounce of earnestness or token drama.  The two hour running length is a breeze to sit though and that makes this one of the simplest recommendations I can muster.
