“Frozen” Review

October 30, 2010  |  Movies, Reviews

“Frozen” is a great 60 minute movie stretched out to 90.  It is a simple premise that places three skiing buddies on a ski lift high above the frozen tundra.  The lift operator mistakenly shuts the power down, stranding them in a simultaneously claustrophobic and vast expanse.  There not too much more to the film other than the prerequisite set-up which gives us a cursory insight into the personalities and relationships of the three friends.

Emma Bell has a few truly stand-out moments.  She is a star in the making.  Ashmore and Zegers hold their own and fit the material well.  The writing is routine — after all, it is a simple movie and it needs a simple script.  The movie looks great considering a modest budget.  I suppose you could compare this film in structure and tone to the 2003 scuba diving movie, “Open Water”.  If there is any complaint, I suppose it would be that it feels rather thin.  It is the cinematic equivalent of a single Pringle potato chip — tasty and appreciated… but I could have gone for some more.
