The Hilarious Originality of "Cashback"

The Undeniable Beauty of "Angel-A"

The Thrilling Excitement of "Black Book"

The Best & Worst Films of 2007

OTHER AWARDS...

2007 ranks as one of the best so far in this decade, just behind 2002 and 2004.  This was a really deep year with over 80 recommendable titles hitting movie theatres.

"No Country" and "Juno" were probably the people's favorites... and they both land in my Top 10 too.  However, foreign films reigned supreme in 2007.  Four French films, one Dutch film and one English film make the list.

And, at the start of the year, I would never have guessed that the same man who directed "Total Recall" and "Basic Instinct" would have produced the best film of 2007.

Of course, there are always a great deal of stinkers imposed upon us every year -- and as always, I have my list of the worst bombs to hit multiplexes in 2007.

So, without further ado, let's start with the good stuff...

The Top 10 of 2007
Who said that they don't make films like they used to?

1. Black Book
An impeccably made old-fashioned wartime adventure.
2. Angel-A
Perhaps the most aesthetically beautiful film of 2007.
3. Cashback
An utterly unique and visionary romantic comedy.
4. La Vie En Rose
Featuring one of the greatest performances of all time.
5. The Page Turner
A Hitchcockian slow-boiler that sends chills down spines.
6. No Country for Old Men
The Coens make their best film since "Fargo".
7. Juno
Sarcastic wit masks one of the most heartwarming of '07.
8. There Will Be Blood
Paul Thomas Anderson & Daniel Day Lewis... nuff said.
9. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Lovely and inspiring -- this biopic is truly special.
t10. Into the Wild
Learning that "Happiness is only real when shared."
t10. The Hunting Party
Funny... Exciting... Fast Paced... Brilliant.

Honorable Mentions
In no particular order, a number of other movies worth noting...

  Paris, je t'aime
A gorgeous collection of 18 short love stories set in Paris.
  Interview
A biting two person play. Steve Buscemi & Sienna Miller..

Another hilarious and important film from Michael Moore.

  3:10 to Yuma
Harkens back to the old-school westerns... great stuff.
  The Kingdom
I am surprised that this film was so overlooked.
  28 Weeks Later...
The best horror film of the year... better than its prequel.
  Factory Girl
Sienna Miller is the real deal in this stunning biopic.

Pierce Brosnan is wonderful in a totally unseen thriller.
  Mr. Brooks
Kevin Costner is in top form in this scary little movie.
  The Assassination of Jesse James
Three quarters good... one quarter masterpiece.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Not enough people saw this jewelry heist gone wrong.
The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
A fascinating documentary about Donkey Kong rivals.

The Worst of 2007
The biggest wastes of time and money from 2007...

10. Evan Almighty
As unfunny and preachy as a film can possibly get.
9. The Brave One
I've never seen a more implausible plot in a film.
8. Hannibal Rising
Completely inept in every way... an undeserving prequel.
7. Shoot 'Em Up
An unfunny farce... a ludicrous action flick... dismal.
6. Sheitan
A grotesque attempt... worthless in every way.
5. Captivity
Probably the most poorly made film of 2007.
4. I Think I Love My Wife
I think I hate this movie and I know I hate Chris Rock.
3. Ghost Rider
What were they thinking with this childish pile of dung.
